What Is Hair Botox?

All About the Needle-Free Hair-Smoothing Treatment

There is no shortage of hair products that help smooth frizz, add shine, or make hair look fuller. But not many can claim to do all three — especially long-term. A popular in-salon hair treatment, however, may be the key to all of the above, and then some: hair Botox. Don’t worry, it doesn’t involve needles.

Similar to the way wrinkle reducers like Botox smooth fine lines on the skin for a few months, hair Botox acts as a semi permanent deep conditioner, smoothing hair for about the same length of time. Despite the name, hair Botox is actually much more related to another popular treatment: keratin treatments, but without the harsh chemicals.

To understand more about this trending treatment, we get insights from Danna, a hairstylist and Nanoplastia educator based in Melbourne, along with two other hair professionals. They explain what hair Botox is, who should get it, and how much it costs.

What is Hair Botox?

For starters, hair Botox is much less invasive than it sounds. According to Danna, Hair Botox “provides deep conditioning and coats the hair with fillers like keratin, filling in broken spots.” This process helps achieve the appearance of fuller, thicker hair.

So that injectable-inspired name? Just effective marketing. “There are no needles,” Danna says. Some brands use a fake 'needle' to apply the product on the hair, but it’s just for show.

The name may also reference the treatment’s anti-aging properties for hair. Unlike facial Botox, hair Botox uses a deep-conditioning treatment to repair damage and prolong hair health. It can reduce the effects of aging on hair. There are different formulas for various hair types and textures, each tailored to enhance hair health.

Benefits of Hair Botox

Hair Botox formulas differ, but they all infuse hair with nourishing and strengthening ingredients. “The treatment contains vitamins like B5 that bring oxygen to the scalp for healthy hair and natural fatty acids like omega-3 to give fullness to the hair,” says Danna. Think of it as a high-octane deep conditioner that leaves hair looking fuller, healthier, and smoother. Benefits can include:

  • Repairing internal and external damage

  • Repelling humidity

  • Improving colour

  • Reducing the effects of aging hair

  • Smoothes frizziness and curls

Although it sounds similar to a keratin treatment, hair Botox does not release formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. It is a non chemical, conditioning treatment that revitalizes and repairs dry, damaged hair, and plumps it up. In contrast, keratin treatments contain more chemicals to smooth, relax, and de-frizz hair.

Is it Safe for All Hair Types?

Yes, hair Botox is safe for all hair types and can benefit just about everyone. “This treatment can be done on all hair types and is best for anyone who would like more shine and less frizz,” Danna says. It is particularly great for damaged hair because it smooths and strengthens. Unlike keratin treatments, hair Botox is safe for pregnant clients and is non chemical, so there are no fumes to inhale.

How Long Does Hair Botox Last?

Hair Botox is semipermanent and lasts up to two to four months, depending on how often you wash your hair. To help extend the life of your treatment, Danna recommends using a hair mask once a week to maintain moisture and smoothness.
