Waxing

Waxing can seem like a straightforward treatment to book, but for those who have never had it done or only get it during the summer, here are a few frequently asked questions and answers to help you plan your treatments effectively.

How long, or short, should my hair be for waxing?

For the best results, your hair should be at least 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch long. If you have coarse hair, it should be closer to 1/2-inch for the first few waxes. Once the hair becomes finer, it can be waxed at a shorter length. If your hair is longer, I recommend shaving the area and booking your waxing appointment for two to three weeks later.

It may take up to three waxing treatments to achieve smooth skin since hair grows in stages and not all hair is at the same stage simultaneously. It is very important to avoid shaving between waxing appointments, as this will interrupt the process and stimulate hair growth again. Plan your waxing treatments in advance, especially if you're preparing for a holiday or special occasion.

How often should I get my waxing treatment?

Every four to five weeks. Regular waxing is essential as it makes the skin less sensitive and over time, the hair follicle will have a weaker grip on the hair, making it easier to remove. Additionally, regular waxing may lead to less hair growth over time.

Is there anything I should do before my waxing appointment?

Yes, there are a few preparation steps you should follow:

  • Avoid showering or bathing immediately before the treatment. Soaking the hair softens it, which can cause it to break more easily and make waxing less effective.

  • Ensure the hair is the appropriate length for waxing.

  • Make sure the area(s) to be waxed are clean.

  • Avoid certain medications and products: Topical exfoliants like Retin-A, Renova, and hydroquinone, oral acne medications like Accutane, blood-thinning medications, and topical/oral cortisone can make the skin more sensitive and increase the likelihood of irritation or complications. Check with your doctor if you’re unsure whether you should be waxed while on or using a medication.

What should I expect after my first waxing treatment?

Expect hairless skin! However, everyone’s skin reacts differently to waxing. You may experience temporary redness and minor irritation for a day or two. Slight itchiness might occur as the hair grows out. Proper post-wax care can alleviate these symptoms quickly. If you’re a bride, attending a special occasion, or going on holiday, I recommend receiving waxing services a month before your special day or departure to see how your skin reacts. If everything is fine, reschedule another wax a few days before.

Will I get ingrown hairs?

It’s possible. Waxing removes the entire hair from the follicle. Your skin naturally hardens and thickens over the waxed area, so it's important to keep that area gently exfoliated. Use a gentle scrub about two days after waxing and continue to exfoliate one to two times a week. Additionally, use a mixture of tea tree and lavender oil to prevent irritation.

To prevent ingrown hairs, avoid the following for 24-48 hours after waxing:

  • Exfoliating products (loofahs, scrubs, etc.)

  • Direct sun exposure and tanning beds

  • Fragrance or irritating creams

  • Deodorant

  • Tight clothing

  • Excessive heat (hot tubs and saunas)

  • Exercise that causes chaffing or sweating

  • Touching the freshly waxed area

After 24-48 hours, regular exfoliation with a shower gel and loofah or exfoliating glove will help keep skin soft and prevent ingrown hairs. Apply SPF 30 or greater sunscreen to any exposed treatment areas as waxing exfoliates the skin, making it more prone to sunburn.

How do I benefit from waxing?

Waxing reduces hair growth when performed every four to five weeks. While shaving crops the hair at the skin’s surface, waxing pulls it out by the root, so it grows back softer, finer, and thinner. Waxing is great for those tired of shaving multiple times per week. The more you wax, the less hair grows back.

Can I shave between waxing appointments?

No, shaving between waxing appointments disrupts the hair growth cycle, resulting in more hair at your next appointment.

Will waxing make my hair grow back thicker, stronger, or darker?

Absolutely not. Waxing does not cause more hair follicles to grow. Regular waxing results in sparse, less coarse hair. Shaved hair feels stubbly because it is cut off at the thick part. Properly waxed hair is removed from the root, and when it grows back, it is finer at the tip.

What is a Hollywood or Brazilian wax?

A Brazilian wax removes most hair growth, leaving only a central strip untouched. A Hollywood wax removes all hair in the bikini area.

What should I do to prepare for a Brazilian or Hollywood waxing appointment?

Preparing for your first Brazilian wax is essential for a comfortable and effective experience:

  1. Let the hair grow out: Ensure the hair in the area is at least 1/4 inch long.

  2. Exfoliate: Gently exfoliate the area the night before your appointment.

  3. Wear comfortable clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothes on the day of your appointment.

  4. Take a pain reliever: Consider taking a pain reliever like ibuprofen before your appointment.

  5. Communicate with your esthetician: Ask any questions you have about the process and communicate any discomfort during the wax.

  6. Maintain hygiene: Shower before your appointment.

By following these preparation tips, you can ensure a successful first Brazilian waxing appointment.
